What's in a name? Naming your Non-Profit

December 19, 2018

Here are some things to think about when picking a name for your non-profit:

First, check the state's corporate and business website/database for the name that you choose for the non-profit.

Then, go and run a search on the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office's website: www.uspto.gov to see if anyone has registered a trademark with that name.

If both of these check out, then check a reliable domain registry to make sure that you can secure a domain appropriate for the non-profit.

The name of the non-profit should have Corp. or Inc. as a suffix. This shows the public that liability is limited to the assets of the non-profit corporation.
