Labor, Agricultural, and Horticultural Organizations

The mission or purpose of a 501(c)5 organization must be to further the betterment of the conditions in labor, agriculture, or horticulture, the improvement of their products, and the development of increased efficiency within these areas. Unlike other forms of non-profits, a 501(c)5 organization may engage in lobbying without jeopardizing its tax-exempt status. However, these organizations cannot directly or indirectly participate in the political campaigns of any candidate for public office. A 501(c)5 organization can participate in political activities as long as these activities are not the organization’s primary activities.
